Why it is Okay to be Selfish

The word selfish tends to have a very negative connotation attached to it. The actual definition of the word selfish is someone lacking consideration for others and who is concerned with only one’s own profit or pleasure.

But I believe it is more than okay to be selfish…to an extent.

When Is It Okay to be Selfish?

It is okay to be selfish when you are benefiting, as long as no one else is truly suffering from your actions.

We all need to take time to be selfish and work on ourselves. We all need to worry about our own lives and work on becoming the best version of ourselves. You need to be at your best so you can truly help others and help this world as a whole.

You cannot give someone $100 if you only have $20. 

What exactly do I mean by this? If you don’t have your shit figured out and you’re struggling and you’re only at about 20% of your true potential, then you can’t give someone your all. You cannot give love if you do not truly love yourself. You cannot give someone worthy life advice if you do not have your own life figured out.

The Solution

Take some time to work on yourself. Take some time to find your true self. Stop wasting all your time working a lousy job. Stop scrolling on social media and comparing your boring life to others.

Work. On. Your. Self.

Be selfish. Take a break from hanging with friends and wasting your time. Take a break from nights out at the bar. Take a break from social media and technology as a whole.

My Best Advice

The best advice I have ever received and the best advice I can give to you right now is; Be the change you want to see in the world.

We all tend to look at all this bad shit going on in the world and get mad at others. We blame others and we wish we could just change everything. But to change the world, you must first change yourself.

If everyone just worked on themselves and became the best versions of themselves all of the world’s problems would disappear.

If you want the world to change, be that change. Lead by example and people will follow when they see how happy and successful you are.


Be selfish. Take some time to work on yourself. It is okay to turn your friends down and it is okay to put things off and take some time for yourself. Because once you better yourself, and find your true self, you can return back to the world, return back to your family friends and everyone will benefit from this better version of yourself. Your happiness and energy will spread, and people will see how much better you are, and they will be inclined to do this for themselves.

Start eating healthier. Stop putting off going to the gym; just 15 minutes of exercise a day can change your life so much. Start reading more books. Spend less time on social media. Drink more water. Meditate. Do whatever it takes to become the best version of yourself.

One Last Bit of Advice

One thing that really helps me stay on track throughout the day is I ask myself before I do something, “Will this help me become the best version of myself?”

If not, don’t do it. Do something that will improve your life for the better.
