The Strangest Secret to Success

Recently I read a book by Earl Nightingale called The Strangest Secret. Nightingale is basically the successor to Napoleon Hill when it comes to Self Help books. If you don’t know who Napoleon Hill is, you definitely need to check out his book Think and Grow Rich. It is one of the best books out there if you want to become successful.

The Strangest Secret was a very short book, but it was full of very useful information. I am going to summarize that book for you and let you in on this Secret to a successful life.

Nightingale starts off by saying only about 5% of the people in this world actually think. The other 95% just drift along in life and are on autopilot by only using their subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind is that which is conditioned and programmed. When you do not think for yourself, you tend to just follow what everyone else is doing. You just live the life that is expected of you.

The 5% that actually think, are the ones who become successful. Nightingale’s definition of success is; “the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.” Basically meaning, these people think of what they want their life to be, and they follow that idea.

To follow one’s goals and dreams you need to have courage. The opposite of courage is conformity. And that is the biggest problem that most of society faces. They are scared of being judged, they are scared of being different, so they just conform and follow what everyone else is doing.

Nightingale then goes on to say, the people who become successful are those who say, “I am going to become this,” and then they begin to work towards that goal.

Success isn’t just about making the most money. Success is making goals and following them. A successful person can be a school teacher who had a goal to become a teacher and pursued and accomplished that goal. That is all success is. The problem is most people don’t even know what they’re striving for. They say that they want to be successful but they couldn’t even define success if they wanted to. This is because they do not have any goals in life.

You can be the hardest worker, but if you have no goal in mind, you will never truly succeed.

The Key to Success

The Strangest Secret, that determines one’s success or failure, according to Earl Nightingale is this:

You Become What You Think About

If someone is working towards a predetermined goal, and they know where they are going, that person is a success.

If you want to be rich, you will be rich.

If you think in positive terms, you will get positive results.

If you Believe, you will Succeed.

The Problem

The biggest roadblocks we face on our road to success is Doubt.

“Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt” -William Shakespeare.

Each of us wants something. But each of us is afraid of something.

To be successful you must be willing to pay the price.

“A moment of pain is worth a lifetime of glory.”

The goal is to realize you are guided by your mind and your thoughts.

To have success you must plant your goal in your mind. Care for it. Work towards that goal, and it will become your reality.

Your subconscious mind is just a sponge that absorbs all of the information and thoughts that you feed it. Your mind does not care what seeds you plant. All your mind does is it just returns what you plant.

You Reap What You Sow.

Why We Overlook Our Minds

The mind is free. And us humans tend to give little value to things that are free. We take it for granted. Whereas things we pay money for we tend to give a lot of value to.

But little do we know the mind is the most powerful tool in the universe.

The harsh truth is we are where we are because that is where we want to be or where we feel we deserve to be.

Although it may not seem like you are where you want to be in life, this is what you have told your subconscious mind. Like I said earlier your subconscious mind is a sponge that absorbs all of your thoughts. So, through years of conditioning and programming and endless negative thoughts we have created this life for ourselves.

Your outer world is just a reflection of your inner world.

If we grew up in poverty and have always been told that we are not good enough to be rich, our subconscious mind truly believes that, and it creates a reality that matches those inner thoughts.

I know in my experience I grew up listening to my parents always talking about lack of money. So that idea was programmed into my brain.

I have had so many opportunities in my life to be rich and successful, but I always turned it down because I was programmed to believe that I was supposed to be poor. My inner self believes that I do not deserve to be wealthy and successful.

How to Use This Secret to Success

  1. You must realize that you become what you think about and you must learn to control your thoughts
  2. You must realize that all of your limitations are self-imposed. The conditioning of your subconscious mind is what is holding you back.
  3. You must use your courage to think positively. Set clear and defined goals for yourself and pursue those goals every day.
  4. Take action. Ideas are worthless unless we act on them. Goals without a plan are just dreams.

30 Day Challenge

Nightingale then provided a 30-day challenge to put this secret of success to the test.

  1. Write down what you want
    • Make it a single goal that is clearly defined
    • Think of this goal in a calm, cheerful and positive manner
    • Think about it all throughout the day (you become what you think about)
    • Form a habit of thinking about this thing
  2. Stop thinking about your fears
    • Don’t spend time thinking about how you will achieve your goal
    • The answers will come to you at the right time
    • Just focus on what you want

Ask and it shall be given to you

Seek and Ye shall find

Everyone that Asketh Receiveth

All you really need to succeed is a purpose and faith.

You must act as though it is impossible to fail.

If your goal is to earn more money you need to realize that the only way to earn money is by providing services or products which are needed or useful. We exchange our time for money.

Your financial return is directly linked to the services you provide.

But remember that success is not about making money.

Earning Money is the Result of Success.

No person can be rich until they first enrich themselves.

And to do this you must Think and stop being controlled by your subconscious mind.

You become what you think about. And that my friends, is the Strangest Secret to Success.
