Why You Need To Leave Your Hometown

There’s an old quote that goes like this: A shark in a fish tank will only grow to 8 inches, whereas a shark in the ocean can grow 8 feet or more. The shark will never outgrow its environment. The same goes for You. You cannot outgrow the environment that raised you. If you are around small-talking people you won’t grow. Change your environment, and watch how much you can grow.

My Experience

Two years ago, I dropped everything, and moved across the country by myself. I am from a small town in Michigan, and like the shark, I could not outgrow my environment. I woke up one day and realized I was not happy. I could not truly be who I wanted to be. So I packed all of my things, and moved to Arizona.

To some it seemed really crazy because I was going in to my senior year of college in Michigan and I just decided to leave and transfer to Arizona State University.

For most people this would sound terrifying. I didn’t plan anything and I didn’t even have a place to stay in Arizona.

But to me, I never felt so alive. It was a 30 hour car ride, and I usually hate car rides, but this one was special. I felt so free and alive for the first time in my life.

Why You Should Leave

Leaving your hometown is a fresh start. And damn it feels good. When staying in your hometown, you are staying in your comfort zone. The comfort zone destroys your life and kills are your dreams. You can read more about that here.

Moving away allows you to truly be yourself. Not the person everyone wants and expects you to be.

Starting somewhere new gives you so many new perspectives. At home you only know one perspective. I am from a super small, simple-minded town. Where everyone just does the same thing.

Work all week at a lousy job and then go to the same bars every weekend and hear the same stories over and over again.

To me that is not fun at all. There is soooooo much more to life.

Moving away gives you an opportunity to become your true self and do the things you have always wanted to, but were too scared to because you didn’t want to be judged.

The one thing I learned is your home should be within yourself. You need to feel at home with yourself before you can be happy. And if you’re stuck in a routine of doing the same thing over and over again, and doing what everyone else does, you will not be able to find your true self.

Conclusion

Leave your hometown. You will be confronted with fear when thinking about starting fresh. But you need to realize fear is just an emotion. Fear stops us from achieving most things in life. But you will realize once you take this first step of leaving your comfort zone, overcoming fear is a beautiful thing and it allows you to grow so much and chase your dreams.

If you are unhappy it is because you are not living out your true purpose. And being confined to a stagnant environment is stunting your growth.

Moving across the country was the best decision I have ever made in life. It made me step out of my comfort zone and confront fear head on. Ever since then, I am allowed to follow any dream I want without the fear of being judged or ridiculed. I am my true self and I have never been happier.
